Convenient location: ibis Paris Opera la Fayette

We stayed 5 nights at ibis Paris Opera la Fayette (strangely, also called ibis Paris Opera la Palatier?). Check-in was quick and friendly. I’ve just seen a post by a fellow reviewer saying attitude of staff is horrible — not in our case. They have been friendly throughout. Perhaps our effort to use our minimal French vocabulary helped! The staff spoke good English to us too, by the way… Anyway, the location of the hotel is good. It may, however,…

Very convenient and clean: Royal Oxford Hotel

As the title may suggest, the strength of this hotel is in its location. Just a couple minutes (easy) walk from the Oxford train station with relatively flat ground throughout, albeit with a few road crossings. The entrance of the hotel was not on the front of the hotel, which is occupied by its restaurant, but is small and located on the Park End Street side. The hotel is also at good distance from town centre, with only a few…

SALA Phuket Resort & Spa: Quiet and tranquil resort

In short: Stayed 3 nights, loved this resort. Strongly recommended for those who want a quiet and serene environment. We visited Sala Phuket for a brief 4D3N break in early September and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Yet, I think this resort is not for everyone – I’m sure some will dislike it for a myriad of reasons especially its distance to Phuket Town, but here’s why we loved it. Location. Sala Phuket is located on the west coast of Phuket,…

Enjoy the lack of tourists: Mai Khao Beach

Located along the west coast of the northern bit of Phuket, the 8km long beach is away from the busy tourist center of Phuket Town. There are resort hotels along the beach (Renaissance, Sala Phuket, Anantara and the like) but whilst most of these have direct access to the beach, they are located far from each other. Combine that with the fact that Mai Khao Beach is considered unsuitable for swimmers due to strong currents, this is one of the…

A sorry excuse of a shopping mall: Turtle Village

Turtle village is perhaps the only shopping mall on the strip of resort hotels along Mai Khao beach. This might make some visitors to feel urged to give it a visit – don’t! That was exactly what we did and here’s why you shouldn’t. Transportation to the mall is usually provided for, as there’s a sole tuk-tuk dedicated to ferrying shoppers from the nearby resort hotels to the mall. As there’s only one tuk-tuk on the job and the journey…

Hotel Eclat Taipei: Decent hotel with a few drawbacks

Located on the corner of Dunhua Road and Xinyi road, Hotel Eclat occupies a very convenient location. A block away is a 24-hours eslite bookshop and the alleys behind the hotel houses a decent collection of restaurants ranging from the local noodle shops to rather hip and pricey Japanese and Italian restaurants. Getting a taxi right outside the hotel hasn’t been any problem although the nearest underground station was quite a few blocks away. THE ENVIRONMENT: Design was in general of…

Homely hotel with friendly staff: Dandy Hotel Tianjin Branch (丹迪旅店)

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Dandy Hotel Tianjin Branch. Initially, finding the hotel was a challenge despite having looked up its address on Google Maps, since the hotel is located on a back street away from the trunk roads. This, however, turned out to be a blessing as that also meant the location is quieter. At approximately 5 minutes walk from an underground station access was easy. The front desk staff were friendly, courteous and efficient. Whilst we…
