Dadong Roast Duck: Not only the duck is good!

Dadong is one of my “default” restaurants when I come to Beijing – I always tell myself I won’t be going again this time, but would end up there somehow. Impressively, whilst the restaurant was always very busy when I visited, they never failed to find me a seat. That the roast duck is good here should be known by most by now. The skin is deliciously crispy and the meat moist and tender. The options of condiments to go…

Park Plaza Wangfujing Hotel: Great value with a host of good restaurants nearby.

Park Plaza is right behind the similarly named (in Chinese) but pricier Regent hotel. The entrance is off the main Jinbao street and rather secluded, but taxis found the place without much problem. Whilst I found the hotel restaurant “Bloo Dining” to be mediocre, there are a few nice restaurants nearby – Dadong Roast Duck at Jinbaohui mall, Lei Garden at Jinbao Tower next door (their HK branches are Michelin starred, but not sure about this one) and Morton’s Steak…

Family Li Imperial Cuisine Entrance

Family Li Imperial Cuisine (厲家菜): Good food with great value. Must try!

Had dinner at the Family Li Imperial Cuisine on Jinbao Street. The restaurant only serves set tasting menus that cost from RMB600 to 3000 per head and is supposed to give a good representation of what their cuisine is about. It was very nice that the waitstaff was not particularly pushy in selling their higher priced menus and said that the lowest priced menu already gives a good taste of their style and the higher priced menus differs mainly in…

Doubletree by Hilton Beijing: Decent hotel for a decent price.

The Doubletree by Hilton Beijing hotel was good enough for its room rates – given that it wasn’t expensive, it is understandable that some features would be missing. It lacks, for example, a proper desk in the room, which could be a problem for business travellers. There is also no bathtub in the bathroom. Internet is free if you join membership, but fast internet is paid. The room itself felt clean, except for the leather(ish) sofa / chairs which always…

Grand Hyatt Beijing: Half-arsed renovation, or no renovation?

Due to work schedules, I have to visit Beijing rather regularly, and often have to stay at Grand Hyatt Beijing for various reasons.  It has it merits and is a good hotel, but its age shows. Located atop Xintiandi right next to Huangfujing, the hotel is adjacent to two subway stations, both within 5 minutes walk indoors via the Xintiandi mall.  Other than subway you’ll most likely be travelling via taxi anyway, so transportation is generally not an issue. For those who like…
