Novotel Shanghai Atlantis: Good to have 24h restaurant.

To begin with, Novotel Shanghai Atlantis is not an expensive hotel. For the price in Shanghai (Pudong, no less) it is difficult to complain, but there are areas that can see improvements. Anyway: 1) The hotel has a 24h restaurant on the 2nd floor, with both buffet and a la carte options. Didn’t try the buffet but the Hainanese chicken rice was good enough for the price. 2) The lobby of the hotel felt rather empty and almost like a…

Park Plaza Wangfujing Hotel: Great value with a host of good restaurants nearby.

Park Plaza is right behind the similarly named (in Chinese) but pricier Regent hotel. The entrance is off the main Jinbao street and rather secluded, but taxis found the place without much problem. Whilst I found the hotel restaurant “Bloo Dining” to be mediocre, there are a few nice restaurants nearby – Dadong Roast Duck at Jinbaohui mall, Lei Garden at Jinbao Tower next door (their HK branches are Michelin starred, but not sure about this one) and Morton’s Steak…

JW Marriott Sukhumvit Hotel: The little problems add up.

There is a lot to like about the JW Marriott Sukhumvit Hotel. Being on the edge of Sukhumvit that is not quite the severely-jammed bit was one. The very friendly staff that made me felt right at home was another. That said, it’s problems unfortunately out-weights the hard work of its staff. 1) It’s location is not the best. Being right between Phloen Chit and Nana BTS stations means it’s near neither. Although the walk to either station is not…

Chatrium Royal Lake Yangon Room

Chatrium Royal Lake Yangon Hotel: Good hotel with slight hiccups.

The Chatrium Royal Lake Yangon Hotel is at a great location. Right on the shore of the Kandawgyi Lake and not too far from the Shwedagon Pagoda – a 10 minute drive sans traffic. My stay at the hotel was not perfect, but very good provided that it is in Yangon. Some complaints: 1) The hotel is very popular – not just for its rooms but also for hosting functions. For the 3 nights I stayed at the hotel, there…

Pun Swe Taw Hotel Entrance

Pun Swe Taw Hotel: Not cheap. Absolutely horrid.

Pun Swe Taw Hotel.  Calling this a hotel was an insult to the word. It fails miserably to meet the bare minimum requirement of a hotel – cleanliness. The environment was utterly horrid. The sheets probably were never changed, the duvet and pillow had no cover and the inside of the supposedly-white duvet was a sick yellowish colour. The slippers provided probably were never washed and had a weird disgusting stickiness. The first room I was given had a bathroom…

Dandy Hotel Da’an (丹迪旅店): Great Boutique Hotel

This wasn’t our first time staying at a Dandy Hotel in Taipei and it certainly won’t be our last.  In our previous visits we stayed at the Tianjin Branch and found it to be nicely designed, young and comfortable.  For a change, we decided to stay at the Da’an branch for our short Christmas trip, The location of the Da’an branch is superb.  Sitting on Xinyi Road Section 3 but with its entrance facing Lane 31, it is a good…

Premier Inn London Euston Hotel: Superb location, comfortable accommodation

There is no getting around it – Premier Inn Euston is a budget hotel, although at 90-100 pounds a night such “budget” is in London terms. Any comments on its quality must therefore be given with reference to its price. The location is superb. Not far from the hotel is Euston Tap, the famous tap room with 27 beers on tap, including a number of cask ales. Just a bit further is the Euston station. To the east, at a…

CitizenM Glasgow: Great hip hotel

The location for the CitizenM Glasgow hotel is not the most convenient – it is quite a few blocks away from the Glasgow train station. For those who are contemplating walking with your luggage, don’t, because it is all the way uphill from the station. Taxi fare was 4-6 pounds and was well worth it. That said, much of central Glasgow is walkable from the hotel and the national bagpipe center is right next door. Location aside, the hotel was…

Ibis Edinburgh Centre Royal Mile: Superb location, nice hotel

Oh Ibis Edinburgh Centre Royal Mile.  If all Ibis hotels are as nice as this I will be staying at their properties all the time!  However, this ibis is unlike any other ibis I’ve stayed at before, probably due to their relatively new decor. Maybe the place was renovated recently? The room we had was spacious and modern with a comfortable bed. Even the windows open and close smoothly. The photos with this review will speak more than I can…

Bowmore House: Superb B&B on Islay

We stayed at the Bowmore House for 3 nights as part of our Scottish Routs whisky tour of Islay. The hosts Andrew and Alison were great, the food (and whisky) at breakfast were great. Of course, when on a whisky tour one would need a nice hearty breakfast to prepare for the whiskies!  The room was clean and tidy and the bathroom was huge. The location of the Bowmore House is perfect. It is not far from the city center of…
