We have joined the Platinum tour at the Scotch Whisky Experience, which included a tasting of four whisky from different regions (Highland, Lowland, Speyside and Islay). The four whiskies offered were decent and may be representative of the regions, but were not particularly good. That said, given the price it is probably reasonable that the whiskies offered were not particularly outstanding. The scratchy card that release scents that are supposedly representative of the regions, unfortunately, was distinctly artificial. It does nonetheless serves the purpose as a nice introduction.
The guide for the tasting session was very knowledgeable, but I really hoped to have the option to pay extra to taste truly outstanding whiskies rather than the ones we had.
The little fun ride through a “distillery” was informative and enjoyable, but only if you haven’t visited any actual distilleries before. Otherwise you would have heard much of the same, probably more, at the distilleries. They have tried hard to replicate the experience at a distillery, including the smell, but of course it’s still not quite the same.
The viewing of the giant whisky collection was fun and interesting yet somewhat dull at the same time. You only get a really short time with explanation of the few interesting / weird bottles. The most important lesson from this section is that when you have a nice bottle of whisky, you’d better drink it or the angels will take it from you.
For me, the Scotch Whisky Experience is a great option for an introductory activity, something to be done before heading off to a proper whisky tour. We made the mistake of visiting after a 4 day Islay distilleries tour where we visited operating distilleries and tasted great whiskies straight from the casks, which have left this Platinum tour in its shadows.
